Character Name: DG
Fandom: Tin Man
Chronology:During episode three, as DG and her companions enter the Realm of the Unwanted. Canon bump! DG is now post series.
Background: DG was born in the Outer Zone – also known as the O.Z – to the kingdom’s lavender eyed queen and her husband Ahamo, who had been blown into their world in a hot air balloon. She had an idyllic childhood, spending her time being tutored in magic and playing with her beloved older sister, Azkadellia. Everything changed, however, when DG unwittingly freed an evil witch during an otherwise normal outing. Instead of standing by her sister, a terrified DG fled and gave the witch the opportunity to possess Azkedillia.
Under the control of the wicked witch, Azkedillia murdered DG. To resurrect her daughter, the queen sacrificed her magical powers and sent the youngest princess to live in her father’s home world under the protection of two specially designed ‘nurture units’. Her memories cloaked, DG came to believe that she’d been born in Kansas and that the robots were her true parents, but she was far from happy there. Dissatisfied with her life as a waitress, she dreamt of something more.
These daydreams became more important when she began to dream of the O.Z and a strangely familiar woman with lavender eyes. Eventually, Azkadellia, who had by then seized control of the O.Z and imprisoned the queen, sent a party of soldiers to Kansas to capture DG. She had no choice but to jump into their travel storm to escape and journey to the kingdom’s Central City in search of the Mystic Man and some answers. On the way, she befriended Glitch, the queen’s former advisor, Cain, a one time tin man, and Raw, a viewer. She also encountered her robotic parents and learned the truth about her parentage, though that created more questions than it really answered.
The Mystic Man directed the group to the Northern Island, the royal family’s ice encased palace. While there, DG discovered what her mother had done to save her, but, before she could come across any more answers, Azkedillia arrived and captured DG and Raw. Interrogation revealed that the Emerald of the Eclipse, a powerful potential weapon sought by the witch, was protected by the Grey Gale, but DG’s cloaked memories couldn’t reveal anything else.
Eventually, the Mystic Man was murdered by Azkedillia and DG followed his cryptic advice and headed south after she and Raw were rescued by Glitch, Cain and the shapeshifting ‘Toto’ who had tutored her as a child. They had no idea that Tutor was in the pay of Azkedillia, helping her follow them to the realm of Finaqua even as he helped DG rediscover her magic.
In Finaqua, DG discovered how her actions as child contributed to Azkedillia’s rise to power. Horrified, she had no other option but to press on and follow her mother’s instructions, travelling to the Realm of the Unwanted in search of her father, Ahamo. While there, they were led into a trap. Glitch, Cain and Raw were captured by Azkedillia’s soldiers and DG was carried away by the Seeker, who later revealed that he was Ahamo.
Although initially hostile towards him, DG allowed Ahamo to lead her to the Grey Gale, where she learned that she was named after a distant relative, ‘Dorothy Gale’. She also received the emerald from an echo, or a representation, of the original Dorothy. Unfortunately, before she could take it to a safe place, Azkedillia arrived, capturing both Ahamo and the emerald and leaving DG imprisoned in the mausoleum of the royal line.
DG escaped using magic and was reunited with her friends in time to infiltrate Azkedillia’s tower. The witch aimed to use the emerald to power a 'sun seeder' designed by Glitch during his time as the queen’s advisor, covering the land in permanent darkness. After reaching her sister, DG managed to clasp hands with Azkedillia, joining their powers and freeing her from the witch's hold. At long last, DG had found the home and the family she had always dreamed of.
Personality: When DG was reunited with her father for the first time since returning to the O.Z, he described her as a “pistol”, and that’s probably a fairly accurate summary. As much as I hate using a word as cliché as feisty, that’s what she is. She’s stubborn, particularly when it comes to accepting her father, and a little wilful, and she definitely doesn’t sound like a cultured princess. Since she was raised on a simple farm in Kansas, pomp, circumstance and fancy gowns will never be DG’s thing. She’ll always be more comfortable wearing jeans and she’ll always be more comfortable in informal settings. (She even drops in cultural references from the world she was raised in from time to time, and her sense of humour occasionally borders on laconic. Very unprincess-y.)
DG is occasionally prone to throwing herself in headfirst – for example, she charged impulsively at a group of soldiers, without realising that they were just projections – and to acting unconsciously. She has a very definite sense of right and wrong, too, at least on a larger scale – the frequent clashes with Officer Gulch were the result of a desperate to desire to stretch her wings and nothing to do with malice – and will follow it instinctively. When it comes to good and evil, she can be incredibly focused.
Because she grew up feeling – accurately, as it happens – that she didn’t belong in Kansas, DG is a bit of a dreamer. She’s spent her whole life looking for something more and a place to call her own. She isn’t used to fitting in, so she is incredibly eager to prove herself and to be the person she always should have been. She wants to deserve the faith people seem to have placed in her – her friends' trust, for example, and her mother’s sacrifice – and she wants most of all to make amends for the terrible things she accidentally did as a child. Her quest is as much about redemption, albeit on a subconscious level, as it is about saving the kingdom and saving her sister. Despite trying to listen to Cain and push her guilt aside, she hasn’t managed to exorcise it entirely.
DG is very good at dealing with the unexpected, whether that consists of befriending a man with a zipper on his head or discovering that she’s actually, technically, a princess. Strange things might shock her, but, after ending up in the O.Z via a storm, nothing is that strange. She won’t let shock stop her from doing what she has to do, which links to how focused she can be. When she had to find her parents, nothing was going to stop her. She is fiercely loyal, loving her friends and family utterly and completely.
Abilities and Weaknesses: DG is an ordinary human, more or less. She certainly has all the vulnerabilities that that entails, with no special fighting abilities and no traces of immorality or invulnerability. However, she does have a degree of magical ability, denoted by the magical symbol on her palm. (Not that the full extent of her powers is actually explored in the series.) She is shown to be able to make objects move and spin – rudimentary telekinesis – and to be able to restore areas that have been previously damaged by magic. As a child, she received lessons on how to use and control her powers. These lessons were cut short when she was forced to leave the O.Z and, consequently, her powers are patchy and unpredictable. Even she has no idea of what she’s capable of. (Which is, understandably, probably her biggest weakness.) The only thing that’s really certain is that she’s much more powerful when united with her sister.
Her other major talent is drawing. DG is a talented artist, and, before returning to the O.Z, her sketches included scenes from her past life. The show doesn’t specify if these are prophetic drawings or simply a product of the dreams that had been plaguing her. I tend to go for the latter, because her magic, along with her memories, was cloaked when she was sent to Kansas. Although a few fragments slipped through, it’s unlikely anything else did.
